Burgundy Report

"A few greener wines but also a few really great wines that are worth searching out – and at all levels!"

  • 2020 Cépage Confidential: Sacy : Hmm – that’s a really a very fine nose – almost a blend of Chablis and St.Bris. Nice structure, lovely mouth-watering citrus flavour – but more than just citrus. Nicely zesty and finishing with a little perhaps reductive minerality. Great, delicious wine.
  • 2020 Saint-Bris Curiosité de Bourgogne : Vibrant, an attractive mint-leaf complexity here. A faint tannin and a width of fresh, mouth-watering faintly minty flavour. It has no pretensions it’s just joyful and delicious. A fine finishing width of flavour too.
  • 2020 Aligoté La Vigne de Marie Louise : Open but a bit more reductive. Mouth-filling, plenty of concentration, no fat – carafe – but this is lovely…
  • 2020 Bourgogne Chardonnay Côtes Salines : Narrower and more saline – check! Ooh – now that’s really really good – mobile, mineral, accented with both sweet and salt – completely delicious – a great apero Bourgogne!
  • 2020 Petit Chablis : Hmm – that’s really the seashore – a super nose! Hmm – energy, width, fine intensity for the label and moving into the finish with waves of fine flavour… That’s really a great PC
  • 2020 Chablis : Fresher, more direct, yellow citrus freshness with a very small point of green. I taste it more in the flavour – but again on a low level – this is mainly about minerality and lemon-lime citrus flavours framed with a tiny grain of tannin.
  • 2020 Chablis ‘1975‘: ‘We wanted to do a different cuvée but everyone does ‘old vines’, they are not the oldest vines that we have, but they are the same vintage as me and Céline!’  Fresher, more pure, more seashore again. Hmm, a little calmer but classier, super purity of flavour and a really good fluidity to this flavour. The finish a little contemplative but delicious.
  • 2020 Chablis 1er Vosgros : Deep, wide, more mineral and shellfish style. Supple but still energetically mouth-filling. Long and direct finishing. Slowly fading. Very good!
  • 2020 Chablis 1er Vaucoupin : More open, still the attractive note of the seashore – this time with a little yellow-citrus skin to embellish. More structured, more complex perhaps a bit more tannin too. Really a wine of admirably strong character – it’s really an excellent wine…
  • 2020 Chablis Grand Cru Bougros : A tiny DIAM-style reduction with this one – slowly opening and widening with a more golden ripeness of fruit. Supple, assured, concentrated – really super texture. A wine with a hint of reduction on the palate too – it won’t be a problem if you wait 2-3 years, otherwise carafe. Very good…
  • 2020 Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses : Ooh – that’s a beauty – open, complex, perfumed – it’s a big hug! Hmm – that’s wide, cool-fruited, slowly melting falling deliciously over the palate – that’s an excellent Preuses and simply a great wine...

And two red to finish:

  • 2020 Bourgogne Pinot Noir La Vigne d’Emile : Deeply coloured. Broad, airy, plenty of greener, pyrazine, complexity. Fresh, mouth-filling – I don’t really see the herby green parts in the flavours. This is really a wine with a mix of intensity and concentration. A super finish.

  • 2020 Irancy : Also deeply coloured – also spiced with plenty of pyrazine complexity. There’s plenty of tannin here – but there’s no grain. Really a big wine, a little drying but also with fresh energy. You could say that this is the more elegant of the two but they are both so big that it’s a minor detail. Large, wide finishing.

Decanter 2021

  • Chablis 2020 :

A relatively recent estate, Céline's father is Jean-Marc Brocard, while Frédéric worked at Domaine Durup. They continue to make great strides with their Chablis. This is a lovely example, compared to many, with concentration on the palate and extra layers of flavour. Despite the power and ripeness of the fruit, the wine is kept in perfect balance by crisp acidity and a fine, mineral finish. Great stuff.

Wine Enthusiast 2021 :

  • Chablis Grand Cru les Preuses 2020 : 96/100 - Cellar selection
  • Chablis Grand Cru Bougros 2020 : 93/100
  • Chablis Premier Cru Vosgros 2020 : 92/100
  • Chablis Premier Cru Vaucoupin 2020 : 91/100

  • Chablis 2019 Cuvée 1975 : 92/100

« Steely mineral tones and cutting green apple and lemon collide in this brisk, fresh-fruited Chablis. Medium bodied and supple in texture yet refreshingly slim in profile, it begs to be paired with fresh oysters or sashimi. Ready now, the wine should maintain peak through 2027. » ANNA LEE C. IIJIMA

  • Chablis 2020 : 90/100

« Crushed stone and oyster shell offset pretty blossom and white peach in this fresh, lip-smacking Chardonnay. Although slim in profile, it offers plump pear and Mirabelle flavors lifted by a zesty spine of acidity. Vinified with no oak influence, it's a steely, mineral-intense sip best enjoyed now through 2026.” ANNA LEE C. IIJIMA

Burghound Magazine, Allen Meadows

  • 2020 Petit Chablis – 87pts

There is enough Chablis typicity to be convincing on the nose of apple, mineral reduction and acacia blossom scents. I like the energy of the overtly saline-suffused flavors that are not especially dense but the delicious and refreshing finish is certainly attractive. 87/2023+

  • 2020 Chablis – 88pts

A riper nose offers up ever-so-mildly exotic aromas of passion fruit and citrus confit where a hint of sauvignon blanc character lurks in the background. The delicious, round and succulent flavors culminate in a clean and dry if mildly fruity finale. This is interesting in its fashion though the finish is not as crisp as I might like. 88/2023+

  • 2019 Chablis – 87pts

There is just enough Chablis character to be persuasive on the fresh and bright aromas of citrus zest, tidal pool and iodine. There is reasonably good vibrancy to the easy-going and nicely textured flavors that exude a refreshing salinity on the mildly warm and ever-so-vaguely sweet and warm finale. This could use better depth and it’s so forward that I doubt much more will develop before this is completely ready. 87/2022+

  • 2020 Chablis Cuvée 1975 – 88-90pts

Here there is ample Chablis character to the quinine, oyster shell and iodine suffused nose.

There is more weight and mid-palate density to the punchy and appealingly textured medium-bodied flavors that display

notably better depth and persistence on the very dry finale. Lovely. (88-90)/2024+

  • 2020 Chablis “Vosgros” – 89pts

Ripe but nicely airy aromas include those of citrus confit, quinine and white-fleshed fruit along with a hint of algae. The exceptionally rich and vaguely sweet medium-bodied flavors possess good vibrancy while the finish flashes enough salinity to buffer the sweetness. This isn’t my style but it’s well-made. 89/2024+

  • 2019 Chablis “Vosgros” – 89pts

There is moderate Chablis character to the vaguely exotic aromas of sea breeze, quinine and shellfish along with a whisper of citrus influence. The round, rich and delicious middle weight flavors possess good mid-palate fat while displaying reasonable depth and persistence on the agreeably dry finale. To enjoy on the younger side. 89/2023+

  • 2020 Chablis “Vaucoupin” – 90-93pts

Cooler and more restrained aromas are both elegant and airy while grudgingly giving up its notes

of white orchard fruit, especially apple, along with hints of acacia, lemon-lime and tidal pool wisps. I like the texture to the

almost delicate middle weight flavors that pack very good punch on the clean, dry and focused finale. While this should benefit

from a few years of cellaring, it should also drink well relatively early on. (90-93)/2025+

  • 2020 Chablis Bougros – 91-93pts

This is also aromatically ripe yet cool with its array of green fruit, ocean breeze and iodine scents. The fleshy and larger-scaled yet unusually refined flavors (in the context of what is typical for Bougros) possess fine punch and power that carries over to the saline, sneaky long and balanced finish. (91-93)/2026+

  • 2020 Chablis Les Preuses – 91-94pts

A mentholated top note can be found on the curiously minty aromas of green apple, lemon rind and algae hints. Here too the suave texture of the medium-bodied flavors is relatively fine while also exuding a bracing salinity on the longer, slightly firmer and well-balanced finale. While this could use a bit more depth to merit the upper end of my predicted range, the underlying material appears to be present for that to occur. (91-94)/2027+

  • 2020 St. Bris Curiosité de Bourgogne – 88pts

(a curiosity of Burgundy). This is ripe to the point of being overtly exotic with its aromas of spiced poached pear, lemongrass, passion fruit and white orchard fruit compote. Despite the ripeness of the nose, there is actually very good vibrancy to the intense and refreshing middle weight flavors that deliver sneaky good length. This is very sauvignon blanc in character and while it’s ripe than I personally prefer, it still works as the finish is balanced. 88/2023+

  • 2019 St. Bris – 87pts

(this is noted as “Curiosité de Bourgogne” on the label, which is to say a curiosity of Burgundy). A very sauvignon blanc nose of lemongrass and cat pee character leads to round, delicious and vibrant middle weight flavors that conclude in a very dry and overtly citrusy finish, indeed it’s like sucking on lemon rind. 87/2022+

  • 2020 Bourgogne-Chardonnay Côtes Salines – 87pts

A slightly fresher nose reflects notes of mineral reduction and citrus rind. The racy and solidly intense middle weight flavors possess a lovely underlying tension before culminating in a reasonably complex and lengthy finale. This too offers fine quality for its level and is also a wine that should drink well shortly after release. 87/2022+

  • 2019 Bourgogne-Chardonnay Côtes Salines – 87pts

Fresh notes of apple, quinine and citrus rind introduce agreeably energetic and mildly tangy flavors that possess a round, rich and fleshy mid-palate while the citrus character reappears on the ever-somildly warm finale. To enjoy immediately. 86/now

  • 2020 Bourgogne Pinot Noir “La Vigne D’Emile” – 86pts

Notably ripe aromas consist mostly of poached plum, dark cherry and warm earth scents. The lavishly rich, supple and round flavors possess reasonably good vibrancy and an attractive texture where the only nit is a touch of warmth on the lingering finish. This is quite forward and a wine that should be approachable immediately upon release. 86/now+

  • 2020 Irancy “Mazelots”: (100% pinot noir) – 87-90pts

A markedly earthier and more sauvage nose is also notably ripe with liqueur-like aromas of various dark berries and a hint of spice elements. There is again good vibrancy to the delicious middle weight flavors that still terminate in a rustic and mildly warm finish. This offers plenty of character if limited refinement in a sufficiently structured package to reward 4 to 6 years of cellaring. (87-90)/2025+

  • 2020 Bourgogne Aligoté “La Vigne de Marie-Louise” – 87pts

A spicy and overtly lemon-inflected green apple scented nose leads to delicious, round and saline flavors that are clean, agreably dry and refreshing. This is a quality Bourgogne and one that should drink well early on. 87/2022+

  • Chablis Premier Cru Vaucoupin 2019 : 94 points

"Intense aromas of peach, white flowers, yellow plum and seashore introduce this perfumed white. Fresh, linear, detailed and harmonious, leaves a chalky, mineral element on the long aftertaste. Drink now trhought 2025. - B.S."

  • Chablis 2019 : 90 pts

"Bright straw colour with a green hue. Flinty and pure nose with youthful fruit, apple, melon and citrus with some nuttiness. Nice purity and grip, bone dry and salivating with clean fruit flavours and good length."

BURGUNDY REPORT, vintages 2019

"As each year, a seriously good selection of wines, with more than enough great wines to fill up a very above average case!"

  • Petit Chablis 2019 :

"A larger, more open nose, faintly touched with salinity and a stony aspect. Mouth-filling, I like the energy here, the shape, the mobile nature of the wine. That’s delicious, energetic lots of citrus acidity and nothing austere – super personality, eminently drinkable and the balance to keep."

  • Chablis 2019 :

"Wide at the base, good salinity though a little tighter above. A similar volume in the mouth but the combination of salinity and minerality is more overt, a little more concentration visible here. Wide, intensely citrus – no pain! – that’s a beauty again."

DECANTER 2020

  • Chablis Premier cru Vosgros 2019: 93 pts

"A classy Vosgros with ripeness of stone fruit allied to an intriguing fennel/herb character on the palate."

  • Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot 2019: 93 pts

"Showing rather more of a rich, toastier style, this has some driving mineral characters underneath with lovely concentration. The freshness imparted by the east-facing, steeply-sloping face of Blanchot contrasts with the warmth and ripeness of the 2019 vintage. A Grand Cru which has a fine balance of richness, power and structure, that is already drinking very well."

  • Chablis 2019 : 91 pts

"Another Chablis from the (often-overlooked) commune of Prehy, Celine & Frederic Gueguen have produced a Chablis with an excellent balance between fruit ripeness and bright acidity. Fleshy, forward and appealing, there is good concentration here with citrus acidity to keep the palate fresh. An appealing spicy note rounds of the finish."

GUIDE HACHETTE DES VINS 2021

  • Chablis 2018 - 1 star

"Ripe fruit (apricot) invades the nose, which does not detract from its elegance. In the continuation, the mouth is full-bodied, greedy, offering a lot of consistency. The finish on orange zest brings a nice freshness and originality. "

  • Bourgogne Côtes Salines 2019 - 1 star

"With a minerality that appears from the first nose, the name of this cuvée is well respected. A cuvée born from a young 12-year-old vine, very fresh indeed, therefore mineral, but also lemony and endowed with a fine texture. and supple. A very Chablisian white burgundy. "

WINE ENTHUSIAST 2020

  • Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot 2018 : 95 pts

"A touch of fresh, ripe lemon zest is all that peeps thought on this wine's shy and closed nose. More air reveals lovely hints of petrichor and chalk. The palate is rounded and textured. Yeastness and chalky depth aligh themselves to bright, ripe lemon, and the lemony chalkiness lasts beautifully. Drink by 2040." T. Elenteny Imports.- A.K.

  • Chablis Grand Cru Bougros 2018 : 95 pts

"A hazelnut like, slightly lemony creaminess feels like balm on this wine's subtle nose. The palate also has a soothing effect, with layered creaminess that is made up of chalky depth, yeasty smoothness and gentle pithiness. Despite the ripeness and slight warmth of the wine, it has a cooling streak and tons of concentration. Brink by 2040". T. Elenteny Imports.- A.K.

  • Chablis Premier Cru Vosgros 2019 : 93 pts

"Apple, lemon, buttermilk and yeast all show on this wine's funky nose. The palate unites these notions on a buffered, concentrated, chalky and lemony body that has subtle depth. The wine is smooth, fresh and understated." T. Elenteny Imports.- A.K.

  • Chablis Cuvée 1975 2018 : 92 pts

"Lemon zest and billowing creaminess are the chief markers in this wine's subtle nose. The palate adds juicy flow and a supple, yeasty texture that answers to the fruitiness. Lemon brightness pervades and adds flowing balance. The finish is fresh." T. Elenteny Imports.- A.K.

  • Chablis 2019 : 90 pts

"Subtle lemony zestiness on this wine's nose comes with a gentle floral dimension. The palate lets the lively lemon, which also has a hint of candied peel, spread over the tongue, covering everything in mouthwatering freshness. It is bright on the finish." T. Elenteny Imports.- A.K.

WEINWISSER, November 2020

  • Chablis Premier Cru Vaucoupin 2018 : 16 / 20

"Blasses grünliches Gold. Frische Äpfel und Birnen sowie etwas Zitrone in der Nase. Gute Frische im Geschmack mit angenehmer Frucht, feinkörnige Mineralik, gute Länge." André Dominé.

Today’s Chablis Has More Women Winemakers Than Ever

https://www.forbes.com/sites/jillbarth/2020/12/30/todays-chablis-has-more-women-winemakers

Céline Brocard , of Domaine Céline et Frederic Gueguen, hails from generations of wine-growing women. Her mother, Claudine Petit, inherited vines in the commune of Saint-Bris le Vineux from her mother, which came from her grandmother, in 1882.

“My grandmother had a very strong personality; she was authentic and direct,” says Gueguen. “She was hard working and went to the vineyards whether it rained or shined. She instilled core values of courage, strength and determination in my mother.” These qualities are what Gueguen hopes to pass to her teenage children.

Gueguen says that women winegrowers in Chablis have the same discussions and concerns and their male neighbors, and that her closest collaborative network includes her family and friends, rather than a collective of other women winemakers.

There’s one topic in particular that drives much discussion among Gueguen and her Chablis neighbors: climate change. “If today we are intervening on the harvest date, tomorrow we will probably have to consider other solutions, such as perhaps the incorporation of new grape varieties that will allow us to preserve the typical character of our wines, namely freshness and minerality.”

Burgundy report, vintages 2018

"Showing a few more cuvées this year. 2018 continues the house style of freshness and a certain classic style – even in the face of the 2018 vintage – many highly recommended wines here in 2018."

  • Saint-Bris 2018 : "More aromatic – still saline but a spiced depth of fruit too. More overt mouth-filling volume. Round, easy, delicious with just enough structure to make the wine more than a little interesting. Excellent Bourgogne."

  • Chablis 2018 "Cuvée 1975" : "A little extra musk – but not muscaté vines. Super line and drive – this is top, extra direct, super acidity. Super classic – bravo!"

MARCH 2019

Chablis Domaine gueguen 17 : 90 pts

The 2017 Chablis is vibrant and energetic on the nose with yellow plum scents complementing the citrus fruit. The palate is well balanced with crisp acidity, taut and linear yet with ample weight towards the finish that fans out with mango and mandarin notes. What an excellent Chablis Village! Tasted blind at the BIVB Chablis tasting.

Chablis Vaucoupin Domaine Gueguen 17 : 90 pts

The 2017 Chablis Vaucoupin 1er Cru has an attractive bouquet with red apple, orange pith, hints of custard creams and almond aromas that are well defined. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, taut and linear with a fresh, lightly spiced and quite persistent finish. Enjoy this over the next 5 to 7 years. Tasted blind at the BIVB Chablis tasting.

-- Neal Martin

Chablis Vosgros Domaine Gueguen 17 : 92 pts

The 2017 Chablis Vosgros 1er Cru, matured for 6 months in stainless steel, has a taut, flinty, smoky bouquet that is razor-sharp and expresses its terroir with style. The palate has a twist of sour lemon to kick things off. This Vosgros is full of tension from start to finish with a touch of austerity on the "aloof" finish. If you like your Chablis a bit mean, then this is for you. Excellent. Tasted blind at the BIVB Chablis tasting.

Céline et Frédéric Gueguen – 2015

Tasted in Préhy with Frédéric & Céline Gueguen, 19 January 2017.

Domaine Céline et Frédéric Gueguen
31, Grande rue de Chablis
89800 Préhy
Tel: +33 3 86 41 45 06
www.chablis-gueguen.fr

Rather like one of my previous visits this day (Clothilde Davenne), Fred was rather to the point with his vintage observations:

Fred on 2016:
2016 was complicated here!

“There was so much hail here in Prehy – in 17 of our 22 hectares it wasn’t possible to harvest. But the grapes that survived were good, also our vines in Chichée weren’t touched. For the 40% of people who only sell in bulk, they can go on holiday! €300-350 per barrel of Chablis in 2008/09 now getting closer to €1200!

Fred on 2015:
2015 – it’s a vintage par excellence.

The wines…

As last year, the wines here are delightful, intense, pure, complexy and persistent. Thumbs up for this super and mildly eclectic range!

2015 Côteaux Bourguignone Sacy
Only about 10 hectares remain – Gueguen have 0.30. This is an old vine sacy – 50 years old – in Saint Bris that takes a Côteaux Bourguignone label. Facing Northwest, planted between Chitry and Saint Bris. Produces a bit more than chardonnay, was widely planted in Chablis at one time, because as a late ripener, it avoided some spring frosts. Normally it’s a much more saline wine vs chardonnay Fermentations really the same as chardonnay – all fermentations, malo included and only in stainless steel.
A nice aromatic volume, some freshness and a little bready note. Hmm, this is fine, fresh, mouth-watering stuff. Indeed faintly but not overly saline. Wide and long finishing with a subtle citrus. Delicious and fresh – possibly an aperitif wine, but really delicious!

2015 Bourgogne Côtes Auxerre
West, south-west facing hillside.
A bigger nose, saline and sweet too – nice volume and freshness. Also nice volume in the mouth with freshness and a great line, and just a delicious finishing flavour. Bravo!

2015 Petit Chablis
From Préhy, 3 parcels 1.3 ha in total.
A wider palate of aroma – a little more fresh volume too – it’s very inviting. Supple, layered, delicious citrus and growing but never too rigorous minerality. Another super wine with a fine finishing floral addition. Excellent.

2015 Chablis
From Préhy and Chichée – 6 hectares in total.
A deeper nose, round but of more modest volume – certainly a little more classically saline. Wide and fresh, cool fruited, a little more silk to the texture, a little less overt energy, yet perfectly mouth-watering and mineral. This is a wine to wait a little longer for – maybe 6 months – but it will be worth it. Lovely and it’s a super, lingering finish.

2015 Chablis 1er Vosgros
Two parcels, one in Vosgiros, together about 0.45 ha and with about 25 years of age.
Round, but tighter, with saline hints, and also a suggestion of depth. Ooh, directly more weight a little extra depth of texture and more concentration of flavour. This really begins to fill the mouth, slowly mouth-watering, and with delicious, melting, fruit flavour. The sensation is of minerality but the flavours are of fruit – but really deliciously finishing fruit. Excellent!

2015 Chablis 1er Vaucoupin
40-year-old vines in one single parcel, planted in 1975.
Open, classically saline Chablis with just a suggestion of supporting citrus. Really excellent in the mouth – an almost steely minerality and freshness, yet cushioned with a modest sucrosity – long, almost layered finishing flavour that is, once more, simply delicious. Bravo!

2014 Saint Bris
3 parcels combined, mainly north-west facing like a lot of the sauvignon.
Bright, wide, clean and sweetly inviting. Hmm, this is very mineral – wide, mouth-watering, indeed steely stuff. Great St.Bris doesn’t shout sauvignon, and this is a great St.Bris. The finish is more sauvignon and almost minty, but this is very nice indeed.

2015 Irancy Les Mazelots
This was hailed a little but still managed to achieve 40 hl/ha.
Medium-plus colour. Deep, perfumed, faintly pyrazine, but simply, invitingly impressive. Fresh, clarity of ripe fruit behind, but I’m still very impressed by the line and freshness of this, it’s quite a mineral wine with fruit of very fine clarity. I would definitely give this some time, but the freshness together with the fruit – really a summer-fruit cocktail today. Yum!

January 2017

2015 Sacy

Really salty aroma. Extreme freshness on the palate. Might go well with oysters but a bit lean on its own. 2017-2019 15/20

2015 Saint-Bris

Intense Sauvignon aroma of box tree and a thiol smokiness – stands out especially amid all the Chardonnays. Just a little bit sweaty. Grapefruit and herbs on the palate. Light and zesty but not much intensity on the mid palate. 2017-2018 15/20

2015 Chablis

Chalky, creamy lemon aroma. Nicely dusty. Lively, with a firm dry texture. Benchmark Chablis in a lightish style but has quite good persistence. 2018-2022 16/20

2015 Chablis 1er Cru Vosgros

This has a more cedary aroma than the straight Chablis, maybe just slightly smokily reduced at the moment. Very crisp and more herbal on the palate. Finishes rather abruptly but well balanced and finely fresh. I prefer the greater purity of the straight Chablis. 2019-2024 16/20

2015 Chablis 1er Cru Vaucoupin

Very salty and a touch of cedar as well as green fruits. Piercingly fresh. Richer and fuller on the mid palate than the Vosgros and a longer creamy finish. Just a little watery in the middle. 2018-2023 16/20

Domaine Gueguen Chablis 2015 – 90 pts

French Chablis makers can't take another tiny harvest. So they're bringing in anti-hail cannon

Frederic Gueguen is the president of the Chablis winegrowers association. He estimates the harvest will be down to about one-third of its usual size. Gueguen lives in the village of Prehy. He takes me around his vineyard at the back of his house.

“Here, no grapes, you see?” he says. “We walked about 15 yards into the vineyard and I saw just one little bunch of grapes. Usually we have 15 bunches per vine. This year, we may get two or three instead, but it may still be worth harvesting. That could be about a fifth of what we normally do, but that’s better than nothing.”

This plot was almost completely destroyed by a brutal hail storm in May, which, eerily, followed one exactly two weeks earlier, at exactly the same time of day. Gueguen was just coming home when it hit. He watched through the kitchen window as the hail trashed his vineyard.“I went inside the house and in a few seconds, I saw my vineyard going from a green leafy state with long twigs, to nothing, zero, with a thick layer of hail on the ground,” he says. “I told myself it would never end, it was hitting so hard. The ground was white as in winter. It was very violent, you get hit in the face with this, you have tears in your eyes, and you feel lost.”

Chablis 2014 : Absolutely classic Chablis nose – stony and wet wool, a touch of citrus/green fruit without being overly pungent. Dry, slightly grippy. 2016-2020 15/20

Chablis 1er Cru Vosgros 2014:  A little more intensity than the straight Chablis on the nose. Still has that stony/chalky aroma but more obvious fruit. Not particularly intense but focused and reasonably priced. 2017-2022 15.5/20

Chablis 1er Cru Vaucoupin 2014:  More steely than their Vosgros, a little more salty too. Bone dry, tight, succulent and long. 2017-2022 16/20

Saint-Bris 2014Gosh, Sauvignon Blanc! Crisp, nettly and fresh, with a little bit of texture. 2016-2017 15.5/20

BURGUNDY REPORT

Bill Nanson report from January 2015

Saint-Bris 2013

  Mars 2015 Rondje Chablis

A delightful bed and breakfast in Prehy, just outside Chablis. A welcoming English speaking couple, Celine and Frederic Gueguen, a lovely room (€90 per couple) and views (at least from the breakfast kitchen) of the estates vineyard. Yep, they even make wine so be sure to ask for a tasting (free).

Soon it was on to visit Domaine Céline et Frédéric Gueguen. While Frédéric is responsible for making the wine, Céline does the admin for the estate and also runs a small guest house, receiving visitors from as far afield as China and Russia. The Gueguens are seeking distribution in the UK for their trio of Chablis, with production due to increase from 10,000 bottles in 2013 to 30,000 bottles this year.

Avril 2014
